For a short time, it looked like the Canadian BYD story had finally landed.
A report spread online from Deep Dive saying BYD would launch passenger vehicles in Canada in late 2026, open more than 20 dealerships, and bring specific models here. This was all sourced from a twitter account @StellaLiBYD, who at the time had ~240 followers, but it did have a blue check mark.
Then hours later, Global News picked up on it, and reddit /r/evcanada was ablaze. Shortly after, there was a comment on Global News stating:
"This is wrong. This is sourced from @stellalibyd, which is a twitter account from Africa with like 200 followers. Stella Li is an executive of the largest EV manufacturer and she only has 200 followers and made the account in Africa? Makes no sense." The Global News article was removed shortly after.
An editor’s note saying the article failed to meet its editorial standards. According to that note, BYD said it had not announced, approved, or confirmed plans to launch passenger vehicles in Canada, open more than 20 dealerships, or roll out specific models.
The Deep Dive also corrected its own BYD Canada article. It said an earlier version relied on statements attributed to BYD executive Stella Li from an X account that was later identified as an imposter. The correction removed specific claims about launch phases, dealership timing, and a C$25,000 BYD Seagull.
In addition, the imposter @StellaliBYD twitter account had originated from Africa. At the time, pressing "About" showed the origin from Africa.
This leaves hopeful Canadian buyers at square one again.

Those clues are less exciting than a viral headline. They are also more useful.
Canadian buyers should be especially careful with model rumours. The Atto 3, Seal, Dolphin, and Seagull are all reasonable models to watch because they exist in other markets. But none should be treated as confirmed for Canada until BYD says so.
The same goes for price. A C$25,000 BYD Seagull would be a major story in Canada. Right now, that number should not be treated as reliable.
